Tesla battery gives farmers reliable alternative energy source

Farmers have been told that Telsa’s battery storage technology could be thrown into the mix when it comes to food, fibre and energy production.

Telsa believes that battery storage offers more options than traditional energy sources such as diesel, according to a report on abc.net.

“The history of innovation in Australia is really impressive,” says Manager for Telsa Energy, Nick Carter. “The scene is basically set to drive that in the next couple of decades. I think it could be a massive area of growth.”

One of Australia’s key attributes is the vast amounts of space available, says Carter. Even though the continent is dry, which can be an issue, this will have no effect on a farm’s power storage capabilities.

“If there is land available, then use it for essentially mining or growing energy and if you’re grid-connected you could end up in the future when the rules change, selling it back as another revenue stream,” Carter said.

So, can a farm take advantage of a power source such as a battery storage device?

“You’ve obviously got to engineer and size the system,” Carter said. “If you’re going to use say 2 megawatts at 9:00am or 7:00am in the morning, we can build a system around that and size the solar that goes with it or the grid connection.”

As is stands, diesel is still a more cost-effective option, however if fuel prices were to rise substantially, then a power source like Tesla batteries could be an alternative.
