“The photos, and the ideas, are the product of well over 100,000km of dusty, muddy roads, late night highway miles and the roadhouses, sunsets, waves, strangers and friends that have pushed me, challenged me and kept me looking for beauty in every direction.”

ONE hundred thousand kilometres of outback roads, 20-hour days at work in the desert, and one man’s determination to document the striking sights of outback Australia.

That’s the recipe behind The Philosophy of Travel, a coffee table travel book combining the photography and essays of 4WD Touring Australia host Carlisle Rogers.

After arriving in Australia from the US as a 20-year-old surfer doing the east coast backpacker trail, Rogers turned his focus towards exploring the country’s vast interior.

A former music journalist and self-taught photographer, Rogers always knew he wanted to travel for a living. Now he’s living his dream.

Long desert drives give him plenty of time to listen to music and reflect while enjoying the outdoors.

“I’m always looking for colour in the landscape. I’m looking for where everything bleeds together. It’s really intended to portray a feeling, so I guess you could say it’s impressionistic,” he said.

As for his favourite place to travel, as a surfer, the Queenslander admits he’s always drawn westward.

“I love the west coast, including the west coast of South Australia,” he said.

“I love where the desert meets the sea. My ultimate is travelling through a desert to a surf spot.”

Australians can learn much by exploring their own country, he said.

“You can go to Paris, you can go to all the museums in Amsterdam, but you’re not going to really grow as a person unless you travel in Australia,” he said.
