The largest festival of its kind in the world, Vivid Sydney is returning in 2015 for a seventh spectacular season with an unprecedented program of illuminations, musical events and creative thinkers.

Come to Sydney from May 22 to June 8 and discover why the festival was last year named Australia’s best tourism event, attracting almost 1.5 million people. Here’s a rundown of this year’s line-up:

Vivid Light

The Sydney Opera House will again be the dazzling centrepiece of Vivid Light, a technicolour riot of light installations, lasers and illuminations that will transform the facades of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Vivid Light is a feast for the eyes, but it’s also an interactive public art space. Meander along the Light Walk with its illuminated swings, human brain and curious monsters.

Stop by Circular Quay and paint the town red with a new installation that allows visitors to literally colour the Sydney skyline with laser lights controlled by a touch screen. Step into a mirrored shipping container at The Rocks and enter a kaleidoscopic other universe, courtesy of hundreds of flashing multi-coloured LED Pixel lights.

Finally, come back down to Earth at Darling Harbour with the Laser Fountain Water Theatre, featuring water spirals, shooting jet sprays, lights, rainbow-coloured lasers, dancing flames and music.

Vivid Music

If Vivid Light is candy for the eyes then Vivid Music is a smorgasbord for the ears. British musician Morrissey will headline the 2015 program, which includes more than 70 performances at venues across the city. Morrissey will take centre stage at the Opera House, which will also host Silverchair front man Daniel Johns as he makes his solo debut. Also topping the bill are ARIA Hall of Fame legends the Hoodoo Gurus and American indie folk singer Sufran Stevens.

Get your funk on at Soul of Sydney, a tribute to soul, funk and disco; move to the groove at the Seymour Centre with a showcase of experimental, electro and improvisational music; and bop to your own beat at Central Park’s Silent Disco – a unique three-DJ set where you choose your tunes through a set of headphones.

Vivid Ideas

What do astronomers, gamers and media barons have in common? They will all be sharing grey matter at Asia Pacific’s annual melting pot of innovators and creative thinkers. Described as a celebration of innovation, creativity and community, Vivid Ideas brings together some of the world’s most intriguing minds for an 18-day expo of creative conferences and public events.

The Game Changers talk series will feature insights from four creative powerhouses, including multi-Emmy winning writer and Mad Men series creator Matthew Weiner, and founder of Wallpaper magazine and the Monocle media empire Tyler Brûlé.

Festival goers can learn about the Story of Light from a panel of renowned astronomers. Tech-heads will be in raptures with a one-day conference dedicated to exploring the possibility of creating a ‘Southern Hemisphere Silicon Valley’ in Australia, while gamers will be wired with the three-day event Game|ON, showcasing the latest innovations in games technology, e-sports and online video.
