Combating fruit fly in Sunraysia district Victoria by grower lead committee

An industry committee has been formed to renew the fight against fruit fly in the Sunraysia region.

The creation of the committee comes after the demise last year of the Murray Valley Citrus Board due to a legal challenge to the grower levy it collected.

Victorian Agriculture Minister, Peter Walsh, says a majority of citrus, table grape and stone fruit growers have voted to support the establishment of the new body and he hopes growers will also support a new compulsory levy to try and combat 33 current fruit fly outbreaks in the area.

“People do have the opportunity to ask for a refund if they believe they’re not getting any service out of that particular levy,” Mr Walsh said.

“I would be extremely disappointed if people did, because unless everyone works together we are not going to be able to win this battle.”

The committee is made up of citrus, table grape and stone fruit growers.

Vince DeMaria, chair of Sunraysia Citrus Growers and a member of the new committee, says the new compulsory levy is not a great deal of money to work with.

“Look $3 is bare bones,” Mr DeMaria said.

“But industry decided it would be beneficial to start off on a lower level and work our way up.

“We need to prove to the industry, that we are able to have success, we don’t want any waste in this system.”
