AUSTRALIAN RECORD OZ LOTTO WIN OF $70M GOES TO ONE TICKET OF TWELVE GAMES AT THE GOLD COAST QLD

The winners of OzLotto’s $70 million jackpot are a group of girlfriends who used spare change from a lunch on lottery tickets.

The unidentified group – whose members were not willing to say how many people were in the syndicate – came forward on Wednesday afternoon to claim their multi-million dollar prize.

Customers queue for a Lotto ticket before last night's draw.
Queenslanders will be queuing up to check their Lotto tickets after one winner claimed the whole $70 million prize.

The unregistered ticket was sold on the Gold Coast, at Golden News and Casket Kiosk in Runaway Bay, and was a 12-game QuickPick.

The winners will now go down in the history books as scoring the largest Australian lotto prize on a single ticket, beating the $58.7 million won by a syndicate from Melbourne in 2008.

“When I realised we’d won I just sat there shaking like a leaf!” the head of the syndicate said, in a statement released by OzLotto on Wednesday afternoon.

“We regularly meet up for lunch and after we pay the bill, there’s always a couple of dollars left over.

“I told everyone on the last occasion to throw in some loose change and I’ll buy a lotto ticket in a big draw before Christmas.”

Golden News and Casket Kiosk owner Pam Goldsmith was delighted her store had sold the winning ticket.

“I kept saying to customers this week, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we sold the winning ticket’, never thinking we would,” she said.

An OzLotto spokeswoman said there were reports of people queuing outside newsagents when they opened about 6am.

“The odds are incredible. We would have seen about one third of the adult population buy an entry,” she said.’

The winning numbers were 26, 24, 20, 17, 34, 39 and 36, with the supplementary numbers 22 and 23.
