POOFTER PARANOIA, SO WHAT ELSE COULD YOU CALL IT? GAY MARRIAGES ON THE AGENDA FOR CHRIST’S SAKE

Media laws, climate change and marriage equality will be topics raised and debated at the the Western Australian branch of the Liberal Party state conference this weekend.

Saturday’s conference will be addressed by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop followed by a keynote address by Premier Colin Barnett

WA’s Young Liberals will call for the federal Liberal government to “eliminate laws that require radio and television broadcasters to be balanced”.

They will also call for the power to force income tax to be handed back to the states.

A party spokesman says any policy motions passed at the state conference did not become party policy but were then sent to the parliamentary party for consideration.

“Some will be passed and some rejected. The important thing is the discussion and debate,” he said.

Other motions put forward for discussion include a call for a consideration of optional preferential voting at state and federal level and for the federal government to institute a Royal Commission into the science of climate change.

The Curtin division of the WA branch has also asked for a discussion on same-sex marriage, saying that any redefinition of marriage “must only come through a conscience vote of the people via a plebiscite or referendum”.

“We call on the federal parliamentary party to actively oppose and overturn any attempt by any branch of government, particularly the judiciary, to impose a redefinition of marriage on the people,” the motion says.
